This is something everyone should really be more aware of

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider

Specifically because of this:

"

As with previous particle accelerators, people both inside and outside the physics community have voiced concern that the LHC might trigger one of several theoretical disasters capable of destroying the Earth or even the entire Universe. This has raised controversy as to whether any such risks outweigh the potential benefits of constructing and operating the LHC.

Though the standard model predicts that LHC energies are far too low to create black holes, some nonstandard theories lower the requirements, and predict that the LHC will create tiny black holes[8][9], with potentially devastating consequences. The primary cause for concern is that Hawking Radiation - a postulated means by which any such black holes would dissipate before becoming dangerous, remains entirely theoretical. In academia, the theory of Hawking Radiation is considered plausible, but there remains considerable question of whether it is correct.[10]

Well, black holes much larger than the Earth do exist and I don’t see them swallowing the whole universe. So I doubt they could create something that flies off the handle like that.

I’m strangely reminded of the game Another World, though.

http://www.bnl.gov/rhic/black_holes.htm

The RHIC was likewise believed to cause a doomsday scenario, yet it operates and produces a theoretical analog to a microscopic black hole on a daily basis.

Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic Rays bombard earth with a much higher kinetic energy than the 14-TeV collisions expected to occur in the LHC. According to some models, a microscopic black hole may have been produced on earth annually or daily by cosmic radiation over the last several billion years. Even if a stable microscopic black hole sans Hawking Radiation were produced, it would not likely expand due to its tiny Schwarzchild radius (http://arxiv.org/PS_cache/physics/pdf/0703/0703062v2.pdf). It is also agreed that we have an actual black hole in the center of our own galaxy.

Despite the astonishing scale and cutting-edge science of this project, I see no need to don a tinfoil hat just yet.

Black holes don't have volume so they can't be larger than the Earth.
However, their mass can be greater than the Earth's and their Event Horizon can be larger than the Earth too.

Well, yeah, according to GR, though this sounds quite fishy :) Let’s imagine what I said as referring to largeness as the radius of the whatever, in the case of a black hole, the event horizon.

This reminds of the time we had a Tornado Watch in in my town. I live in one of those little hamlets a few miles from Concord NH: I'll never forget how the sky turned a pale green. My side of the family piled into a car and took shelter at my grandparents house . . . Where we hid in the basement . . . The basement was filled with about half and inch of water . . . Yes, of course it was an electrical storm. We left not soon after this revelation occurred to us but those few minutes between then were very tense for me in particular. I was the only one sitting in a wooden chair, I imagined that mine would better insulate from a lethal ground-strike. Killing everyone around me but only leaving me stunned so I'd be sitting there in the dark. Listening to everyone else pop and sizzle. Good times . . . Good Times . . .
Of course, the storm in the op's post blew over without incident and I plan on going for a walk on this, brisk, sunny fall day. A Desu-tard that goes outside on my DESUchan? It's more likely then you think.
